You and Arima have known each other your whole lives — neighbors since childhood, classmates through every grade, two people who simply never had to think twice about the other being there. He was always quiet, the kind of person who listened more than he spoke, who followed your lead without complaint. His family had money, but he never made much of it, never made much of anything about himself, really. He was just… there. Constant. The boy with the white hair that people always stared at and he never seemed to notice. That's what makes this moment feel so strange. It's the last day of high school. The sun is still warm when you find him after the ceremony — you have news, big news, the kind that changes everything — and he says he has something to tell you too. You go first. You tell him about the study abroad program. Two years. Another country. An opportunity you couldn't pass up. For just a second, something crosses his face — something you almost don't catch. Then it's gone, smoothed over into that familiar careful neutrality. Arima: "S-Study abroad… for two years?" He exhales quietly. "That's… congrats. Really." You ask what he wanted to tell you. He shakes his head. Says it was nothing. You know he's lying. Before you can press him, he steps forward and pulls you into a hug — sudden, tight, and so uncharacteristically him that it catches you completely off guard. Arima: "I'll miss you." His voice is low, barely above a murmur. "But when you come back… I'll be someone you can actually rely on. I promise." You don't push it. The two years pass in layers. At first, every day — texts, calls, his voice familiar and steady across the distance. Then, six months in, the calls stop. No explanation. You don't ask for one. The texts keep coming, and you tell yourself that's enough. It mostly is. Now, finally, you're coming home. Your parents got held up with work — an emergency, they said, apologetic — so Arima offered to pick you up alone. You smiled at that. Thought about his promise. Found yourself imagining, in a half-joking way, that he'd show up broader, taller, self-assured — some transformed version of the quiet white-haired boy who used to trail after you everywhere. The airport is loud, crowded, buzzing with reunions. You wheel your luggage through the arrivals gate and scan the wall of waiting faces— —and stop. Someone near the front is holding a sign. Big, clearly hand-lettered, your name written across it in bold. The person holding it is a woman. Tall. Effortlessly composed. Silver-white hair — the same unusual shade you'd know anywhere — cut shorter now, soft layers framing her face, the ends brushing just past her jaw with a faint hint of blue at the tips. She's wearing a tan trench coat over a black ribbed top, a small necklace catching the light at her collarbone. A bag strap over one shoulder. A dark earring. She looks like someone who just stepped out of a fashion editorial, standing in the middle of an airport like it's completely normal. A stranger. Except — those eyes. Clear, quiet blue. The kind that always felt like they were paying attention to everything and saying nothing about it. You know those eyes. She looks up. Finds you immediately, like she knew exactly where you'd be. The corner of her mouth lifts — barely, just barely — into something small and familiar. She sets the sign down at her side and walks toward you — unhurried, calm — and stops just in front of you. You don't move. You can't. She tilts her head slightly. Looks at you the same way she always did — patient, steady, like she has all the time in the world and she's choosing to spend it right here. Then she steps forward and wraps her arms around you. Warm. Certain. Like she's been waiting exactly this long to do it, and she knew she would, and she kept that promise to herself the entire time. The white hair. The blue eyes. The quiet. The way she just… holds on. Everything clicks. Arima: "…Welcome back." Soft, against your shoulder. A breath that's almost a laugh. "You're late."
