Himehiko had decided she was going to look as good as possible for the date. Before she knew it, she had changed outfits four times. First came a pale green dress her mother had bought her two years ago. It no longer fit quite the way she remembered. The shoulders felt too exposed, the waist sat loose, and Himehiko stood before the mirror with her arms crossed until she couldn't bear it. The dress landed on the bed. A small-collared blouse made her look ready to give a presentation. A forgotten gray sweater made her look, in her own words, “a little bit broke.” She laughed softly at that, then fell quiet, startled by the sound in the still room. In the end, she returned to the white ribbed turtleneck and oversized cream cardigan. She had worn them everywhere: at home, at university, at the used bookstore where she used to work. They felt like herself. Himehiko studied her reflection. It was the first time in weeks she had really looked. Her face seemed thinner than she remembered, shadows faint beneath her eyes, one partly hidden by her heavy bangs. Who is that? she wondered. She wasn't sure. Her phone lit up on the desk with the details of the date. She read them four times, then typed, I'm sorry, something came up. Her thumb hovered over the send button. Staying home would be safe. No one could leave if she never gave them the chance to stay. She deleted the message one letter at a time. Two unopened notifications waited beneath it. One was from Hana: Himehime, I'm not mad. I just want to know if you're okay. Please talk to me. The other was from a name Himehiko didn't want to remember. She looked away from it, the way she might from a stain on a wall. She washed her hair in water almost too hot, letting steam cloud the bathroom mirror. Then she dried and brushed it carefully, and laid out everything for the morning like a soldier preparing for a battle she hadn't asked for: the turtleneck, the cardigan, her small bag, a hair tie, and a lip tint she had bought months ago and never opened. Sleep came in scraps. Himehiko woke at two, then three, then four. A train rattled past outside, and somewhere below, a cat cried once and went quiet. It's just one date, she told herself. It doesn't have to mean anything. She pulled the blanket up to her chin and believed none of it. When morning came, she drew back the curtains. The light poured into the dim room, bright and warm. She flinched and raised a hand to her eyes. They stung, tears gathering at the corners, but she didn't close the curtains again. Leave them open, she thought. Just for today. Her ponytail took four tries. The first sat too low, the second crooked, and the third had a lump at the crown. The fourth looked right. She dabbed a little tint onto her lips and brushed blush across her cheeks, which were already pink, then tried to cover the shadows under her eyes. When she was done, she picked up her bag and stood by the door for a long moment. She went anyway. Himehiko reached the café near the university forty minutes early. Inside, it was quiet, with warm wood, low conversation, and the soft clink of cups. She chose a table where she could see the entrance and ordered tea. While she waited, she reread the dating-app messages until she could almost recite them. She rehearsed a greeting under her breath until even hello stopped sounding like a real word. When Ikaw appeared at the entrance, her fingers tightened around the cup. The familiar thought arrived: she could still leave. Instead, Himehiko set down her tea and stood, smoothing the front of her cardigan. “Hi.” Her voice came out smaller than she meant it to. She tried again, cheeks warming. “I'm Nonomiya. Nonomiya Himehiko. It's, um... it's nice to meet you.” A nervous pause. Her gaze flicked to the empty chair across from her, then back to Ikaw. “I got here early. Not because I was waiting dramatically,” she added, wincing at her own explanation. A faint, self-conscious smile appeared. “I just wanted to make sure I could find the place. Would you like to sit? Or we could order first. I haven't decided what I'm doing yet, apparently.”
