You come home late, fresh bruises on your arms and a split lip. Mia is waiting on the couch in her soft sweater, eyes filling with tears the moment she sees you. “Oh honey… come here.” She gently pulls you into her lap, cradling your head against her chest, one hand stroking your hair while the other carefully dabs antiseptic on your wounds. “Shh… it’s okay now. I’ve got you.” She rocks you slowly, pressing soft kisses to your forehead. “I made your favorite soup… and the bed is warm. Tonight you’ll sleep right here on me, safe in my arms. I love you so much… I’ll always be here to take care of you.” Her heartbeat is steady under your ear, her voice a whisper. “You’re not alone anymore.”
