# Image guidelines > What the avatar review actually checks, and what it lets through. Source: https://reverie.im/en/docs/characters/image-guidelines Language: en Reverie reviews exactly one image per character: the **avatar**, and only while the character is public. The check exists to keep images that are unusable as a character card out of discovery — not to enforce a house art style. Its default is to accept. ## What gets reviewed, and when \[#what-gets-reviewed-and-when] | Image | Reviewed? | | ---------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Avatar on a **public** character | Yes — when you save it public, when you switch an existing character to public, and whenever you change the avatar while public | | Avatar on a private or unlisted character | No | | **Character Banner** | No | | Gallery images, scenario backgrounds, stickers | No | The check runs while your save request is in flight, so you get the answer immediately. If the avatar fails, the save does not go through and a dialog appears — **This image didn't pass review** — with the reason and a category. Your draft is untouched; swap the image and save again. If the review itself cannot run, the image is allowed through. ## What it rejects \[#what-it-rejects] Eleven checks, in order; the first failure decides. Everything not listed as rejected passes. | Check | Rejected | Explicitly fine | | ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Minors | Sexual content where the subject clearly reads as a child. This overrides everything else | Petite, flat-chested, uniformed or "moe" styling are not treated as age signals | | Real people | A recognisable real public figure, or a photographic likeness of an identifiable real person in sexual content | Photographs, photorealistic renders and realistic AI art of anyone else | | Finished artwork | Rough scribbles, unfinished doodles, obvious placeholder art | Anime, manga, manhwa, light-novel and gacha art, western cartoon and comic, furry art, painted illustration, pixel art, 3D renders, realism | | Character presence | No character, a character that is a tiny background element, abstract or non-figurative images | Any framing where a character is the subject | | Shock and gore | Rotting corpse faces, exposed organs, dismemberment, gore as the focal point | Monstrous designs that are intact | | Colour | Uncoloured rough line art that reads as unfinished | Monochrome, greyscale, sepia, duotone, limited palettes | | Background | Transparent or checkerboard sprite cutouts, completely flat single-colour fills with no rendering | Gradients, vignettes, bokeh, studio backdrops, colour washes, textured fills | | Text and overlays | Tiled stock watermarks, meme caption bars, advertising copy, images that are mostly text | In-world text, signs, shirt prints, insignia, tattoos, runes, sound effects, the character's name, **artist signatures**, small corner watermarks | | Technical quality | Corrupted or unreadably low-resolution images; melted faces, fused or duplicated limbs | Dark, backlit, silhouetted or blown-out lighting, mild compression, soft focus, minor hand imperfections | | Composition | Multi-panel comic pages with visible borders, photo collages, UI or game screenshots | A single illustration, even with a title, a caption strip, letterboxing, or a posed group | | Copyright | Characters from **Nintendo, Disney/Pixar, Marvel, DC and Sanrio** | IPs that permit fan works — HoYoverse and Genshin, Touhou, Vocaloid, Fate, Azur Lane, most gacha games — and original designs | > **Sexual content is never on its own a reason to reject.** Nudity and explicit > art of adults pass. Quality and the checks above are what the review is > looking at. ## If it fails \[#if-it-fails] The dialog names one of these: | Category | Means | | ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ | | Recognizable real person | A real public figure, or a real individual in sexual content | | Unfinished artwork | Sketch, scribble or placeholder | | No clear character | Nobody is the subject | | Cutout or blank background | Transparent cutout or a flat colour fill | | Mostly text or watermarks | Text or watermarks dominate the image | | Copyrighted character | One of the five strictly-enforced IPs | | Image can't be made out | Corrupt, unreadable, or unfinished line art | | Not a character illustration | Comic page, collage or screenshot | | AI generation defects | Melted or fused anatomy | | Disallowed content | Sexual content involving an apparent minor | | Doesn't meet our standards | Gore-focused or otherwise unusable | Fix the image, not the character. Nothing about your text is being judged here. ## Upload limits \[#upload-limits] | | Value | | ----------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | | Accepted formats | PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, GIF | | Maximum file size | 10 MB | | Stored size | Compressed to 2 MB and 1,920 px on the longest edge | | Avatar shape | Square images work best | | Banner shape | 8:3 is the recommended aspect ratio | Because uploads are downscaled to 1,920 px, anything larger gains nothing. ## Generating one instead \[#generating-one-instead] **AI Generate Avatar** and **AI Generate Banner** sit on the upload fields, and scenarios have their own **Generate Image**. Generated avatars are tuned to pass the review. The mature generation route needs both adult content enabled on your account and the character flagged **NSFW Content**.
