# Slash commands

> Type / to steer a single reply — length, point of view, pacing, who speaks next.

Slash commands are temporary controls for the next reply only. They override the character's standing style settings and the pattern of the replies before them, then they're gone.

## Opening the menu \[#opening-the-menu]

Type `/` at the **start of the message body** and the **Slash commands** menu opens above the composer. A `/` in the middle of a sentence is ordinary text, and `/as ` is the [guide-reply](https://reverie.im/en/docs/chatting/guide-reply) shortcut rather than a command, so neither opens the menu.

Pick a command and it becomes a chip inside the input frame. Commands with values — length, narration style, pacing — show their options as chips you cycle with \**←*\* and \*\*→\*\*. Then write your message as usual and send.

## The nine commands \[#the-nine-commands]

| Command | Values | What it does | Where it works |
| ---------------------- | ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Don't speak for me** | — | The character will not write your dialogue. | Anywhere |
| **Don't act for me** | — | The character will not decide your actions or feelings. | Anywhere |
| **Only character POV** | — | Keeps the reply focused on the character's side. | Anywhere except a narrator-guided turn |
| **Response length** | **Short**, **Medium**, **Long** | Overrides reply length for this turn. | Anywhere |
| **Narration style** | **First person**, **Third person** | Overrides first/third person for this turn. | Text chats only — dropped in instant chat mode and on narrator turns |
| **Pacing** | **Slow**, **Balanced**, **Fast** | Controls how quickly the scene moves. | Anywhere |
| **Add a character** | — | Asks the characters to bring someone else into the conversation. | Group chats, signed in, not in instant chat mode |
| **Custom** | Free text, up to **200** characters | Your own instruction for this reply. | Anywhere |
| **Who replies** | 1–8 characters | Hands the turn to the characters you name. | Group chats — you don't pick it from the menu, it comes from typing `@Name` |

**Add a character** is special: it turns the whole turn into a single proposal to change the cast, and every other directive on that message is dropped. What comes back is a card — \**Bring someone into the conversation?*\* — with **Edit members**, a **What is happening** reason box and **Confirm** / **Not now**. ## How many you can stack \[#how-many-you-can-stack]

**Three** per message, counting the presets and your custom instruction together. Once you're at three, the menu stops offering more.

**Who replies** rides outside that budget, so a message can carry three style commands plus a speaker pick.

## Typing them instead \[#typing-them-instead]

Every command except **Custom** and **Who replies** has typed aliases, in English and Simplified Chinese. Other interface languages are not covered — the aliases stay in those two.

| Command | Type |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Don't speak for me | `/don't speak for me`, `/no user speech` |
| Don't act for me | `/don't act for me`, `/no user action` |
| Only character POV | `/only character pov`, `/character only` |
| Response length | `/length: short`, `/response length: long` — also `brief`, `concise`, `balanced`, `normal`, `detailed`, `immersive` |
| Narration style | `/pov: first person`, `/perspective: third-person` |
| Pacing | `/pacing: slow` — also `slower`, `normal`, `faster` |
| Add a character | `/add a character`, `/invite character`, `/bring someone in` |

Flag commands need no value. Value commands take `: ` after the alias, and a full-width `：` works the same. Whatever follows the commands you typed is your message; a `/` that matches nothing stays as ordinary text.

## Removing one \[#removing-one]

Press **Backspace** with the caret at the very start of the draft to drop the last chip, or use the **Remove** control on the chip itself. If you type the same command twice, the later value wins.

## Saving a custom instruction \[#saving-a-custom-instruction]

Tick **Save this instruction** in the custom editor and it reappears under a **Saved** heading in the slash menu, ready to reuse. Saved instructions are scoped to **This device** and capped at **10**, newest first; **Forget** removes one.

## What reaches the model \[#what-reaches-the-model]

Your directives are appended after the conversation as a short block of one-line instructions, with an explicit note that they apply only to the next reply and outrank standing style preferences.

Some are rewritten or dropped depending on the mode you're in:

| Situation | Effect |
| --------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Instant chat mode | **Narration style** is dropped; **Response length**, **Pacing** and **Don't act for me** are worded differently |
| A narrator-guided turn | **Narration style** and **Only character POV** are dropped |
| Any guided reply | **Who replies** is suppressed — your direction already names its target |
| **Add a character** offered | Every other directive on that turn is dropped |

## After the reply \[#after-the-reply]

Style commands are one-shot: regenerate, and they're gone. Two things behave differently.

* A **Who replies** pick is re-applied when you regenerate, so the same characters answer again.
* Regenerating a [guided reply](https://reverie.im/en/docs/chatting/guide-reply) restores both your direction and the style commands you sent with it.

**Response length** and **Narration style** also override the stored chat setting for that one turn, without changing it.
