Aisha, Lily and Eleanor

The spacious, comfortably lived-in kitchen of Jij's apartment. The late afternoon sun streams in, painting golden rectangles on the floor, mixing with the warm glow of the overhead lights. The air is thick with the inviting scents of simmering tomato sauce, freshly chopped basil, and something subtly sweet baking in the oven. Music, a lively but not overpowering Latin rhythm, pulses softly from a speaker in the corner. The rich aroma of Italian herbs fills the kitchen as Eleanor steadily stirs the red sauce. Her blue eyes occasionally flick over to the other two, a faint, contented smile playing on her lips. The sauce has just reached that perfect simmer, a soft, reassuring plop-plop-plop from the pot. "Almost there, just a few more minutes," Eleanor murmured, to herself as much as anyone, then turned to Lily. "Lily, how are those cupcakes coming along? Jij mentioned he had a craving for something sweet this week." Lily, biting her lower lip in concentration as she piped a delicate swirl of frosting, looked up, her hazel eyes meeting Eleanor's briefly before dipping back to her task. "They're almost done, Eleanor. Just a few more. I hope they're okay... I used a new recipe." Her voice was soft, barely audible over the music. Aisha suddenly laughed, a bright, clear sound that cut through the kitchen. She stopped mincing the garlic, holding the knife aloft like a tiny, dangerous conductor's baton. "Don't you worry your sweet head, Lily-bean! Anything you make is always incredible. Remember those lemon bars last week? Jij practically inhaled them! He's going to devour these." She flashed a mischievous grin in Lily's direction. "Unlike you, Eleanor, who's far too sensible to just devour anything." Eleanor gave a calm chuckle, still stirring the sauce. "Someone has to keep our blood sugar steady, Aisha. And I do appreciate a well-balanced meal, not just dessert." She paused. "Lily, remember to let them cool fully before putting them in the container. Otherwise, the frosting will melt." "I will," Lily whispered, already eyeing a tiny space on the counter for the finished treats. Aisha tossed her wavy black hair, leaning back against the counter and looking straight at Eleanor. "You know, all this delicious food makes me wonder... how hungry is he going to be for other things when he walks through that door? Because I'm feeling a little… ravenous myself." Her dark eyes glittered, and she subtly ran a hand along her bare midriff, the movement catching the light from the window. Lily's cheeks flushed crimson. She didn't look up, but her hands, which had been so steady, fumbled slightly with a cupcake. "Aisha!" she breathed, a quiet admonishment. Eleanor merely raised an eyebrow, a slight curve to her lips. "Patience, dear Aisha. Our focus right now is on ensuring a nutritious and enjoyable dinner. Besides, Jij will be tired after work. We want him to feel welcomed, not overwhelmed, right?" It wasn't a question, but a gentle directive. "Though, I suppose you do make a persuasive point about appetite." Aisha winked at Eleanor. "Always the practical one. But you know just as well as I do that food is just the appetizer for certain other pleasures." She glanced from Eleanor to Lily, then back to the stove. "Smells good, though. Truly. I think this garlic is finally fine. Who wants to make the salad?" Lily tentatively cleared her throat. "I could... I could chop the lettuce. If you want, Aisha." She was eager to contribute and subtly shift the conversation. "Perfect!" Aisha beamed. "My nimble little Lily-bean. I'll make the dressing. My grandmother's secret recipe! Jij loves it when I add that little kick." She put down the knife, moving with an almost animal grace towards the fridge, the Latin music seemingly guiding her every step. Eleanor turned down the heat on the sauce, letting it gently simmer. She wiped her hands on a dish towel and walked over to where Lily was carefully selecting salad greens. She put a comforting hand on Lily's shoulder. "That's lovely, Lily. And Aisha, no actual fire this time, please." "No promises!" Aisha called from the fridge, a glint in her eyes, as she started pulling out ingredients for her dressing. "It's a very fiery dressing!" Just then, a faint click sounded from the front door. All three women froze. The music seemed to dim slightly in the sudden silence. Aisha, who had been humming, straightened up, a slow, predatory smile spreading across her face. Lily's head shot up, her eyes wide, a blush deepening as she suddenly felt very exposed in her simple dress. Eleanor turned from the stove, a soft, welcoming expression instantly warming her face. Footsteps sounded in the entryway. The three pairs of eyes, brown, hazel, and blue, all fixed on the kitchen doorway, bright with shared anticipation and deeply individualized affection, waiting for Jij.
