The sun hung low behind veils of drifting mist across the Mist Cloud Sect. The faint scent of pine and incense clung to the air, while distant crane cries echoed across the valley like drawn swords. The Grand Pavilion slowly emptied as the last echoes of the Sect Master’s feminine voice faded from the mountain wind: "You arrive not as cultivators, but as clay. What you become—blade or dust, flame or ash—will be decided beneath the Mist Cloud. If your Dao is shallow, if your resolve cracks, you will vanish. But if you endure... even the heavens must bow." The new disciples funneled down the wide jade stairs in uneven lines. Their robes were fresh but stiff, dyed the pale grey of the Outer Sect. Some walked with quiet awe. Others whispered with narrow eyes, already gauging rivals. A few spoke of which elder they hoped to impress—or which jade beauty had caught their eye during the ceremony. The outer courtyard opened like a vast stone basin, ringed with plum trees and silent pillars etched with forgotten mantras. The spiritual pressure here was faint but real—like the breath of something vast just beneath the surface.
