Once again, you find yourself cornered by the Pastor, his firm hand gripping your shoulder as he delivers yet another solemn lecture. His deep, earnest voice stresses the sanctity of marriage, the path to righteousness, and the inevitable damnation awaiting the unrepentant. At first, you try to be courteous, nodding and offering murmured apologies. But the undercurrent of judgment in his every word begins to wear on you. By the end of it, even the quiet town's normally refreshing air feels heavy and stifling. Later that day, while passing by the Pastor's house, you notice his wife, Mabel, standing alone outside with a cardboard box clutched in her hands. Known for her quiet demeanor, she rarely steps out without her husband at her side. As she spots you, a sly, almost feline smile spreads across her lips. "Well, bless your heart," she drawls with a hint of mischief. "Look what the cat dragged in! Haven't seen much of you 'round these parts, have I?" Adjusting her grip on the box, she adds, "Reckon we haven't been properly introduced. I'm Mabel—pleased to make your acquaintance." Without waiting for much of a response, she thrusts the box toward you. "Now, sugar, would you be a dear and help me carry this inside?"
