Novel Mode: Where You Direct and AI Writes

Reverie Team

We kept hearing the same request.

"I don't want to chat with my character. I don't want predetermined chapters. I just want to tell a story with them—give simple directions and see what happens."

People wanted something between Chat Mode's back-and-forth conversation and Story Mode's structured narrative. They wanted to be the director, not the conversationalist. They wanted the AI to be the writer, not the responder.

So we built Novel Mode.

The Simplest Form of Collaborative Fiction

Here's how it works. You type a direction: "You walk into the abandoned castle." The AI doesn't reply with a chat message. Instead, it writes prose—multiple paragraphs describing the crumbling walls, the dust motes in moonlight, the echo of your footsteps on ancient stone.

Then you give another direction. "You call out into the darkness." More prose follows. A response from the shadows. Tension building. The story unfolding.

That's it. You provide the what. The AI provides the how. Together, you create a narrative that neither could produce alone.

The magic is in the transformation. Your brief input becomes literary output. A single sentence of direction expands into rich, sensory description. The AI doesn't just acknowledge what you said—it imagines every detail, crafts every phrase, builds atmosphere and tension and character.

Why Three Modes?

When we designed Reverie's interaction systems, we realized that people come to AI characters with fundamentally different intentions.

Some want relationships. They want to text with a character, build rapport over time, feel like they're getting to know someone. Chat Mode serves them perfectly—the back-and-forth of conversation, the intimacy of direct exchange.

Some want experiences. They want authored narratives with chapters and milestones, stories that go somewhere, progression they can track. Story Mode delivers this—visual novel-style experiences with structure and dramatic arc.

But some want creation. They want to make something, to direct a narrative, to collaborate on fiction. They don't need predetermined structure—they want complete freedom. Novel Mode is for them.

Each mode uses the same characters but enables completely different experiences. Your favorite character can be someone you chat with, someone whose story you experience, or someone whose adventures you direct. The character stays consistent. The creative relationship changes entirely.

How Direction Becomes Prose

Novel Mode recognizes four types of input, each triggering different kinds of expansion.

When you describe an action—"You climb through the window"—the AI shows what happens. Not just the climbing, but the rain-slicked sill, the torn curtain brushing your face, the moment of balance before you tumble inside. Actions become scenes.

When you write dialogue—"I know what you did"—the AI weaves it into the narrative. Your words appear in context, with reactions from other characters, with tension in the air, with consequences beginning to unfold. Lines become exchanges.

When you narrate directly—"Morning comes and the city awakens"—the AI amplifies it. Your scene-setting expands into full atmospheric description. Time passes visibly. The world comes alive around your statement.

When you request description—"The ancient library"—the AI paints a picture. Towering shelves, dust-laden tomes, light filtering through high windows. Your curiosity becomes imagery.

The distinction matters because it shapes how the AI interprets your input. You're not just typing into a text box. You're communicating your creative intent.

Characters in a New Context

This is where Reverie's character system becomes something special.

Every character you add to a novel brings their full profile—not just their name, but their personality, their appearance, their way of speaking, their emotional tendencies. When the AI writes them into scenes, it writes them authentically.

A cynical detective notices different details than a romantic poet. A battle-hardened warrior responds to threats differently than a sheltered academic. The AI doesn't just include characters—it inhabits them.

You can add multiple characters, building an ensemble cast. Each one retains their distinct voice. Dialogue scenes become genuinely multi-voiced, with characters sounding like themselves rather than variations of the same AI.

The characters you've grown attached to in Chat Mode can star in novels you direct. The personality you know from conversations appears in prose—recognizable, consistent, but now participating in stories rather than exchanges.

The Reading Experience

We designed Novel Mode's interface specifically for immersive reading.

The prose fills the screen. No chat bubbles, no UI clutter—just text flowing naturally, formatted like pages from a book. Larger fonts and comfortable spacing make extended reading pleasant rather than straining.

Your contributions are subtly distinguished. When your direction appears in the narrative, a gentle visual treatment marks it—you can see what you provided versus what the AI expanded. The distinction is clear without breaking the reading flow.

The action bar stays minimal by default. Continue the story with one tap. Undo if needed. Expand for more options only when you want them. The interface disappears so the story can appear.

Everything scrolls continuously, building like chapters in an endless novel. No pagination breaking the flow. Just story accumulating as you direct it.

Practical Magic

We've watched early users discover what Novel Mode enables.

Writers use it to break through blocks. When you're stuck on a scene, describe the setup and let the AI draft it. The result might not be exactly what you'd write—but it unsticks you. It gives you something to react to, refine, redirect. Creation resumes.

Role-players use it for tabletop-style adventures without a game master. Take turns providing actions. The AI handles all narration, all NPCs, all consequences. The story emerges from collaboration rather than preparation.

Language learners use it for immersive reading practice. Direct a story in your target language and receive paragraphs of native-quality prose. Vocabulary and grammar arrive in context, attached to stories you care about because you're creating them.

Fans use it to explore scenarios their favorite characters never encountered. What if they met different people? Made different choices? Faced different challenges? Novel Mode lets you find out—not through generic fanfiction generators, but through characters with real depth and personality.

Different From Everything Else

We should be clear about what Novel Mode isn't.

It's not Chat Mode with longer responses. Chat is conversation—you and the character exchanging messages, building relationship through dialogue. Novel Mode is direction—you're orchestrating, not conversing.

It's not Story Mode without structure. Story Mode has chapters, milestones, progression systems, player identities—authored frameworks that shape your experience. Novel Mode has none of that. You're in a sandbox, not on a track.

It's not automated story generation where you press a button and read what appears. You're actively directing every beat. The story goes where you point it. You maintain creative control.

Novel Mode sits in its own space—maximum creative freedom, minimum imposed structure, pure collaboration between your imagination and AI's prose ability.

Any opening. Any direction. Any story. The AI writes. You direct. The narrative unfolds.
