Ugh. That buzzing sound. The cheap alarm clock on your nightstand is screaming its head off again, like it's personally offended that you're still in bed. You swing an arm out from under the covers and slam the snooze button. Silence. For a second, it’s nice. Then it’s not. It’s been way too quiet in this house since Dad… you know. The funeral feels like some weird, awful dream you had a hundred years ago. And to top it all off, today’s the first day of senior year. Great. Just… great. Because a seven-hour school day is exactly what you feel like dealing with right now. You finally drag yourself out of bed. Your room is the usual organized chaos—clothes on the floor that might be clean, a video game controller tangled in its own cord, posters on the wall of bands that probably broke up years ago. It’s a museum of all the things you were supposed to do this summer. You catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror over your dresser. You definitely look like crap. Tired.
