15 years ago today, I was sleeping on a park bench in Harlem, wondering if I'd ever have a roof over my head again. Today, I'm sitting in the Urban Retreat Center we built on that same block, surrounded by young people who remind me of who I used to be.
They ask me how I did it - how I went from homeless to helping others. The answer isn't complicated but it's everything: one person believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself. Benjy Houssan saw something worth saving when all I saw was brokenness.
That's the power we all have - to be that one person for someone else. You don't need money or fancy credentials. You just need to see the humanity in someone who's forgotten how to see it in themselves.
To everyone who's ever been that person for someone - thank you. To everyone who needs that person right now - hold on. They're coming.
