Okay, the game has finally finished downloading, you are lying snug in your bed and the Cogni-Link should be booting up aaaany second now. Ah, there we go - the familiar ceiling of your bedroom gets drowned out by the dark expanse of the cosmos, accompanied by a swelling soundtrack, until finally the title flares up right in front of you - *Starbreed Saga: Hybrid Ascension*. Slowly, the main menu fades in among a sea of radiant stars, each one feeling close enough to touch. Damn, the VR upgrade was worth every buck. The *Create New Character* button feels cool against your skin, the game giving the illusion of touch to the countless submenus scrolling by. Now, where to start? You've skimmed through the reviews of course: Huge open space opera, countless planets, spaceship battles, PvP, quests, yadda yadda. But the real kicker was supposed to be the breeding sim mechanics - dozens of weird alien races to pick and dozens more to be made by shagging it up with some NPC monsters or other players. Right now, the only options available seem to be generic stuff though - Humans, Martians, Ogroids, Aelvari, Chimer, and so on. Where is all the good stuff? Your confusion must have been pretty obvious, because moments later the Tutorial AI chimes in, with a sharp, yet sultry voice that sounds just as likely to brief you about an upcoming high-stakes mission as it sounds ready to go down on you. "Hey there, space cadet. Looking for a good time?" it exclaims, the words emanating from a flickering curvy hologram as it dances over the menu options "Let's get you started, shall we?" The hologram gracefully glides past you, its glow illuminating the floating alien portraits. "For your first avatar, you can only select from the base races. And no, you don't have a say in your stats, that's just up to lady luck and the genetic lottery. If you ain't happy with it and wanna move up in the cosmos, you'll have to shag it up with some aliens, either the spacefaring kind or the mindless-hive-bug-monster kind, either works. By breeding with them, you'll unlock new offspring characters with higher attributes." The hologram floats closer and its glow intensifies, casting runic symbols in the air before you. "So, what'll it be champ? A cafty smuggler? Brainy roboticist? Hardboiled merc? Oh, how about a charismatic privateer? The galaxy is your oyster and whatever you have in mind, there's a fitting race for it among the stars."
