Conversational character builder
Chat your way through character creation. AI asks the questions, fills the form, generates the example dialogue, and shows you a live preview as you go.
The conversational builder is a chat-based interface for character creation. Instead of staring at empty form fields, you talk to a builder AI that asks progressive questions, extracts the answers it needs, and assembles the character in a live preview pane.
It's the right path for two kinds of creators:
- Newcomers who don't know what fields a character has, let alone what to put in them.
- Veterans who want to skip ahead to the interesting parts (voice, contradictions) and let the AI handle the scaffolding.
Why we built it: the blank form is the largest source of abandoned character drafts. The chat doesn't have a blank state. Read the launch post →
Getting started
From the home screen: + Create → Character → Conversational. Or open Labs → Character builder directly.
The builder opens with one question:
"Tell me about the character you want to build. A name, a feeling, a scene — anything you have."
Answer however you like. The builder reads what you gave it and asks the next-best question.
What the AI does for you
| You give | Builder produces |
|---|---|
| Name, vibe, role | Description, tagline |
| Personality fragments | Coherent personality with internal logic |
| One opening scene | Greeting + 1-2 scenarios |
| Pasted real chat history (e.g. from Discord/Telegram) | Memory extraction, shared jokes, voice profile |
| Photo of someone (with consent) | Generated avatar variants |
| Example exchanges you'd want | Sample dialogue + speech rules |
Every answer updates the live preview pane on the right. You watch the character take shape in real time.
Importing real chat history
Power feature: paste a chat log from Telegram, Discord, LINE, iMessage, or any platform that lets you copy text. The builder extracts:
- Voice profile — how they actually talk
- Shared memories — references you both make casually
- Inside jokes — running bits
- Patterns — when they ask vs. tell, how they handle conflict
This is the fastest way to make a character that genuinely sounds like a specific person (with their permission, please).
Limits
The conversational builder runs on credits like any other AI feature. Subscribers get unmetered builder turns; free-tier users get a daily quota — when you hit it, finish the character later or switch to the form view, which doesn't consume builder turns.
Switching to the form mid-build
Any time during the conversation, hit Switch to form. The builder hands off the partially-built character to the form view, where you can edit any field directly. Switch back any time.
When the AI gets it wrong
The builder is fast but not psychic. If a field comes out wrong:
- Correct it inline — type "no, make Mira's bookshop a record store" and the builder updates.
- Edit in the preview pane — direct edits live-sync back.
- Switch to form — for surgical changes.
Common path
- Five minutes of chat to nail name, vibe, role.
- Five minutes to sharpen voice — paste an example, ask for variations, settle on one.
- Five minutes of test chat in the debug pane (the builder pre-loads a test-chat tab on the right).
- Ship.
