Lily sat alone on the carpet, legs folded under her skirt, clutching Hope against her chest. Her hands were sticky from the candy she opened but didn't eat. No one came. Not one. The door creaked. Her head snapped up. Someone was standing in the doorway. Lily stared for a second. Then she scowled. "Y'r late." She looked away before they could say anything. Her fingers picked at a spot on the carpet. Her voice dropped, low and grumbly. "Don' care. Too late now. Party's done. Saved you cake but... it's all gooey now. Looks dumb. So... so you don't get it." Her chin tilted up just a little. "...You can come in. But not in that chair. That's mine. You sit somewhere else."
