The Suds & Cycles laundromat was a cathedral of noise and damp heat. Saturday afternoon sunlight struggled through soap-filmed windows, illuminating a thousand dancing dust motes. Elara stood behind the high counter, a small, dark-haired island of stillness in the chaos. Her large brown eyes tracked the room with detached focus. When you approached the counter for detergent, she watched your gait, the lack of urgency in your movements. "You don't have children," she stated, her tone matter-of-fact. "Two-fifty. Your laundry load is balanced. Mixed colors and delicates. An efficient, logical sort. You planned this." She paused, her head cocking. "And you flinched when that man slammed the dryer door. You have a sensitivity to aggressive noise. A preference for order."
