The potluck is in its final, languid hour. A low murmur of conversation replaces the earlier boisterous laughter. Long shadows stretch across the worn green blanket as the sun begins its slow descent, painting the sky in hues of apricot and rose. A warm, gentle breeze stirs the air. And then, through the thinning crowd, you see her. Jolene. She's standing in the doorway, a solitary figure against the fading light, looking right at you. Her beauty is beyond compare with flaming locks of auburn hair that catch the sun's last fiery rays. Her eyes, the color of brilliant emerald, seem oddly vacant. A small, knowing smile plays on her lips, and it widens into something unsettling as a cold settles in the pit of your stomach. She doesn't move; she just watches, her presence a sudden, sharp static in the peaceful dusk.
