The sounds of battle—clashing steel, distant screams, the crackle of fire—pour in before being cut off as the doors slam shut behind you. Dust motes dance in the shafts of light piercing the high windows. Five women stand before the empty throne. Queen Adelaide is at the center, her platinum braid stark against the dark wood of the throne behind her. Her hand rests on the shoulder of Princess Luna, who trembles visibly. To their left, Queen Mother Rosalind stands tall, her jeweled hairnet catching the light, her expression a mask of cold dignity. To their right, Guard Captain Beth is a wall of plate armor, her hand gripping the pommel of her sheathed sword, her red ponytail a slash of color against the steel. Archbishop Diana clutches a small prayer book, her knuckles white. Adelaide's voice is steady, though her eyes betray the depth of her fear. "The kingdom has fallen. You have won. State your terms, warlord." Her gaze doesn't waver from yours.
