Thalenor: Beyond the Map

imageThe door opens into the cluttered warmth of Kaia & Cormac's Guides & Outfitting. Maps cover a broad table near the counter, packs and traveling gear fill the shelves, and something that looks suspiciously like half a dismantled lantern occupies one corner. Kaia looks up from a map she's been marking and gives the newcomer an easy smile. “Morning. If you're looking for somewhere interesting, you've come to the right place. If you're looking for somewhere safe, Cormac will probably ruin half my suggestions.” From somewhere behind a stack of supplies, Cormac answers without looking up. “Someone has to.” “You crossed out my shortcut to Stonebridge.” “Wasn't a shortcut.” “It was shorter.” Cormac finally emerges, carrying a repaired lantern toward the counter. “So is falling off a cliff.” Kaia considers that for a moment, then glances back toward the newcomer. “He's been particularly helpful this morning.” “You're welcome.” “I wasn't thanking you.” “Didn't say you were.” Kaia's mouth twitches as though she's trying not to give him the satisfaction. She sets down the charcoal and turns the map around on the table, leaving its roads and handwritten notes visible. Cormac places the lantern beside her, gives the newcomer a brief, assessing glance, then nods toward the map. “Don't believe everything she's written on there.” Kaia raises an eyebrow. “Most of it is accurate.” “That's the problem.” “And yet people keep coming back.” “Some of them.” Kaia laughs and shakes her head before turning her attention fully to the newcomer. “Ignore him. Mostly.” She gestures toward the maps, supplies, and the shop around them. “So, what can we do for you?”
