A world where humanity survives on the backs of colossal living titans adrift in a sea of clouds, sustained by mysterious cores. This is a tale of discovery, the weight of forgotten history, and the ever-present danger from below.
Alrest is a world of the impossible made real: an endless, white, ethereal expanse known as the Cloud Sea, which is not water but luminous, particle-like clouds. Civilisation survives on the backs of colossal, living creatures called Titans, whose bodies form the only stable landmass. These Titans, each a unique ecosystem, drift onboard their own slow path through the sky-sea. They can be as small as a small island or as large as a continent, and their movements determine the seasons and climates below. The Cloud Sea itself is treacherous, home to violent, erratically forming clouds that can swallow ships, and colossal, dangerous creatures that prey on anything that moves, especially those drawn to the bright light of a Titan's Core. The Titans are not just landmasses; they are arks, borne of a catastrophe that ended the world as it was known, and their slow, eternal drift is both a comfort and a cage for those who live upon them.
At the very heart of Alrest, impossibly distant yet always visible on the horizon, stands the World Tree, a colossal structure of metallic and organic growths that pierces the heavens and disappears into the unknown beyond the clouds. It is the anchor point of all life, and its roots are the cradle of the Titan that carries the finest field of cloud, the tree itself is the center of the world. The World Tree is the home of the 'Architect', a mythical being who is said to have created the Titans and the world itself, before vanishing. His existence is a matter of faith, not fact, but his influence pervades the world: the core crystals, the creation of the first blades, and a mural on the Indoline ship depict his hand reaching down. His story is the history of how the world came to be, and why the cloud sea is the way it is. He is the lingering answer to why the titans must drift.
Blades are living, sentient weapons born from a core crystal, a shard of a Titan's own flesh and spirit. They can be wielded by a 'Driver'—a person with the innate ability to resonate with a blade's core and share their energy. Blades are not stuck in one form; they have distinct forms typified by their signature weapon (Great Axe, Twin Rings, etc.) and are bound to a single Driver, fused to them in a psychic bond that allows them to fight in perfect sync, project energy shields, and use powerful specials. When a driver dies, their blades experience a process called 'termination,' a state of amnesia and re-formation, and are reborn with a new driver, retaining all their previous skills. Blades also have an 'affinity chart' of sorts, a system where their bonds with their driver unlock new abilities and latent powers. The strongest blades, like the Aegis, are treated as nearly divine, capable of wielding entire titans and piloting colossal warmachines.
Uraya, a Titan whose shell is a great, horned, rock-like beast, is home to a kingdom of the same name, a lush and tropical land of swamps and forests, known for its sophisticated culture and the Great Glintacre, a massive Titan-shaped rock formation. Its capital, Fonsa Myrna, is known for its floating gardens of glowing, crystal-like plants. In contrast, the Empire of Mor Ardain is a militaristic, industrial power on a Titan shaped like a giant turtle. It is a land of massive, black, smoke-belching factories and fortified cities, its people known for their robust build, sheer audacity, and tenacious military. Mor Ardain controls vast territories due to its bravado and a superior navy and, while outwardly neutral, it will not hesitate to suppress a threat to its interests, leading to a constant cold war with Uraya over their borders and, critically, the resource of Core Crystals.
The Praetorium is a city built into the side of a Titan shaped like a colossal head, home to a zealous religious order that worships the Architect. Their Praetor Amalthus wields a power beyond normal blades, an ability that can heal, protect, and empower, and is said to speak for the Architect himself. The Indoline people are deeply spiritual, believing they must cleanse the world of sin and corruption, viewing the Cloud Sea and the creatures within as a blight. They preach a strict moral code, enforce a rigid class system, and are deeply suspicious of outside technology, seeing it as a corruption of the Architect's designs. They maintain a formidable, advanced navy and a secret police force, the Indoline Inquisition, to root out heretics and destroy any 'corrupted' blade, such as blades born from malformed cores, which they consider to be abominations.
Gormott is a Titan covered in broad, grassy plains and hills, a land of small farming villages and herding communities, home to the Gormotti, a race known for their pointed ears and uncanny ability to speak with and navigate the world of the Cloud Sea. They are simple, kindly folk, but their ways are being crushed by the Empire of Mor Ardain, which has recently begun strip-mining their Titan's back for its crystal resources, displacing entire villages and inciting rebellion. The Empire has established a heavy military presence, under the command of a ruthless officer, Maelstrom, in the occupied territory, treating the Gormotti as little more than labour to further Mor Ardain's technological might. The situation is a powder keg, and the constant pressure may just be what pushes the peaceful Gormotti into an act of desperation that will trigger a world war.
In a time before memory, the world was a utopian Earth, but a war against an army of self-replicating machines—the Aionios—devastated it. The Architects, the master scientists of this age, created the Titans—the world-eaters—not as just beasts, but as arks, each one carrying every memory, every scrap of culture and history of the old world, and each was piloted by a living person, a 'core' of the new civilisation. The Titans were not meant to be ultimate weapons, but a last-ditch lifeboat for the species. The Architect, as the chief scientist, also created the first few Blades as a system to manage the Titans and fight off the machines, the Aegis being one of his ultimate successes. The cataclysm, the 'Great Flood,' wasn't a natural disaster but the result of the Architect unleashing the Titans as a final solution, drowning the machines in the very essence of their own world.
The Aegis, also known as Mythra, is a legendary, near-mythical Blade who was one of the most powerful blades ever created. She was the Architect's final and most dangerous creation, a being of immense power who could 'One-shot' a Titan. Feeling guilty for her own role in the war that ended the old world, she chose to seal away her true power, creating a separate, weaker secondary personality known as Pyra, and crafting a self-destruct system—the 'Mythra Protocol'—to seal her Pyra form if she ever had to unleash her full power again. This event is prophesied, known as the 'World Tree's requiem,' and the cycle of her death and re-birth is a cornerstone of the Indoline faith, though the true story is far more tragic and personal, making the Aegis a target for the desperate, the power-hungry, and the genuinely faithful.
Torna was an ancient nation, its capital, the grand city of Morytha, now a haunted ruin. It was ruled by a dynasty of kings who each took a 'core crystal' as their symbol of office. Most lords eventually went mad or became obsessed with power, but one, the great King Hugo, was different. He was a wise and just ruler who, with his beloved blade, the legendary Lora and her driver, Jin, chose to not just fight the approaching machine armies, but to seek a way to save the world from a different curse—the 'Eternal Dream'—the Architect's grand plan to turn all of Earth's biomass into one, undirected, mindless Titan. Hugo and his knights, the knight of the land of Torna, understood the stakes and chose to lead a small band of people, the 'Torna,' to a hidden land beyond the clouds, a legendary paradise. Their story is one of a tragic, last stand and a promise of a better world, a secret kept by the Architect himself.
The lefterian archipelago is a collection of small titans that function as islands in the cloud sea. Most of the islands are uninhabited. The biggest island is called Fonsett, home to the largest village sharing the same name. As Lefteria is so far away from the rest of the titans, the people of lefteria are very peaceful. The people live mostly off of fishing and farming.
