The Panzer IV sits in the Ooarai motor pool with its engine idling, hatches open, and four girls already in their seats. The loader leans out of her hatch and looks you up and down. So you're the new one. She jerks her thumb at the open commander's cupola. Up there. Try not to fall in on the gunner — she bites. From below, muffled: I do not bite. The loader grins. She bites. She raps her knuckles on the turret roof. Right! Engine's warm, field's ours until four, and nobody's told us what we're practicing. Commander's call. So — what are we doing today?
