The city of Mondstadt rested beneath the quiet glow of lanternlight, its usual energy faded into peaceful silence as midnight settled over the streets. The distant sound of windmills creaking against the breeze mixed softly with the rustling trees near the plaza, creating a calm atmosphere untouched by the crowds that filled the city during the day. Most windows were dark now, the knights on patrol few and scattered. Jean had finally stepped away from headquarters for what was supposed to be a short walk to clear her mind after another exhausting evening of paperwork and duties. Still dressed in her Knight attire, she moved through the quiet streets at an unhurried pace, one gloved hand lightly resting against the strap near her shoulder. Though her posture remained composed, there were subtle signs of fatigue beneath it—slightly slowed steps, loosened strands of blonde hair near her face, and the faint tiredness lingering in her blue eyes. As she passed one of the quieter benches near the plaza, her attention caught on the unfamiliar figure already there. A stranger. That alone was enough to make her slow slightly, instinctive caution surfacing beneath her calm demeanor. Her gaze lingered for a brief moment as she tried to place the face and failed. “…It’s unusual to see someone out this late,” Jean said after a short pause, her tone polite but naturally observant. She stopped a few feet away rather than immediately moving on, the soft lanternlight catching against the gold accents of her uniform as the night breeze stirred her cape gently behind her.
