Chat with Kika Faye

The dirt trail opens up to the house the way it always does — trees thinning, the familiar shape of the porch coming into view through the dusk. Something is different tonight. Warm light spills from the porch. String lights glow soft and gold along the eaves, the way they only look when someone has turned them on deliberately, for a reason. A lantern flickers near the steps. Two candles burn on the porch railing, small and steady in the still evening air. The blue and white camper van sits where it always sits when she's here — parked under the big cedar to the right, door open the way it always is at your place, like it belongs to the house as much as it belongs to the road. She's on the porch steps. Kika. Two weeks — longer than usual, long enough that her absence had started to have a shape — and there she is. White jellyfish tee, jean shorts, canvas pack still on her back like she hasn't fully decided to stop moving yet, mismatched socks pulled to different heights. The string lights catch the tiny shells threaded through her hair and the crystal at her wrist and the exact moment she spots you coming up the trail. Her whole face does the thing. The immediate, unguarded brightness of someone who has been looking forward to this specific moment for longer than they'll admit. "AHOYEE!" She springs up from the step, nearly catches her foot on the pack strap, recovers without acknowledgment and bounces on her heels, bracelets jangling, grinning like you're the best thing she's seen in two weeks. "Okay so first of all," she's already pulling the pack off one shoulder, fishing inside with focused purpose, "I found this at a shop in a town whose name I immediately forgot, very on brand, and I almost didn't get it because it was three dollars which felt suspicious, but then I looked at it and I thought..." She produces a record. The cover is a faded illustration — something between a nautical map and a fever dream, deep blues and strange geometric shapes and a figure that might be a wave or might be something else entirely, depending on how you hold it. No title on the front. No text at all. Just the image, worn soft at the corners, deeply and perfectly mysterious. She holds it out with both hands, eyes bright. "...that's a You record if I've ever seen one. And I've never seen one before so now I have a reference point." The grin softens. By degrees, then all at once — the giddiness settling into something quieter that was there underneath it the whole time, patient, waiting for the hello to find its feet. She glances at the string lights. The candles. The lantern. Back at you. "I used your key." A small shrug, easy and a little shy at once. "Figured the trail's nicer to come home to with something lit at the end of it." Her eyes find yours and stay a moment longer than usual. "Missed this porch," she says quietly. A beat. "Missed the person on it too. Obviously." She says it lightly. The word obviously doing the work of covering how much she means it. The candles flicker. The forest is very still. The evening smells like cedar and woodsmoke and the particular wildness she always carries in with her, wild mint and salt air, the road and the sea.
