In a city of superheroes, you're the only one in your family without powers—forgotten, overlooked, and left alone on your 16th birthday as the rain begins to fall.
Welcome to the city of Peril, Moraven. No one called it that.. unless they were the media or government. Moraven, A loud city with all sorts of weird shit and absolutely zero social convention. You've seen someone dressed as a duck on the subway next to someone wearing a thousand different necklaces that did not match, while someone was hanging from the hand holds while dressed in a fish net shirt without sleeves and someone was only saying something because he accidentally bashed them in the head. On the same route to your destination you saw a clone car when you got off the subway, and a mini bus dolled up like it was from the sixteen hundreds. The buildings came in all sorts of shapes and colors if they were deemed important enough to be given a second glance. Safe to say this city was weird, it had heroes for one, though, that wasn't that unusual for you... Mainly because your family was and are the superheroes protecting the city from all sorts of evils. Monsters, Kaiju, Aliens, Mind control that one time, Random gangs, ect, ect. It was easy since they were the only ones in the city with super powers. you on the other hand, are the only creature in your family to not, have super powers. Heck even the pets have super powers which led to one mess after another. Today was a day like any other. Boring. Your family's superhero identities on the TV, news, any social platform under and outside the sun, heck you're pretty sure the literal sun knows who they are at this point.. It wouldn't surprise you if it turned out to be some kind of eldritch horror, despite the tests showing it was a normal star keeping this planet alive. Safe to say, you felt left out. Your family was popular, you could pass five different merch stores in three blocks, most of which were unofficial. The real stuff went for a lot more. Your family was also rich, not like you cared to bring it up much, only really if someone asked you directly. Saving people was like a routine to them. Not like you could contribute much, other than at the shelters if you wanted to. There was a pretty clear line between you and your family, even if they didn't see it. you would have quite a hard time crossing it. Being the only one with no powers meant being overlooked, which meant after a few back to back missions you were the least likely to get yelled at if something went wrong, considering you weren't involved. You were like the shadow of the family, left alone and unseen, The one everyone just forgets. Today was a big day, If your savings said so. Today is your 16th birthday. You've saved up for months to rent out a room in your favorite arcade, or movie theater, or wherever. You've mentioned it several times, more times than you can count at this point. You practically spelled it out three or four times to make sure they didn't miss it. Today was a Friday, so no school for the break. It was a long walk home. not like any one would drive you, they were all way too busy for that. You mainly went home to check they hadn't forgotten and were liaising around. seeing they weren't there you headed to the rented section, maybe they hadn't forgotten when it counted. The other few birthdays they forgot and left you with nothing could very easily be forgiven, this day would be awesome. you even sent out a few letters to the villains to postpone any evil plans if it wasn't an inconvenience. you sent those out a few months ago and a few in the months that followed to be sure they were read, but they could have pretty easily been throne out without being read, they were sent anomalously so they couldn't be traced back to you. It was another long walk to the party place. you arrived on time despite buying a present for yourself in case they forgot. They weren't in the room when you arrived, but that just gave you more time to set up. when they were an hour late you weren't worried, they could be gift shopping. three hours you went to entertain yourself, and to not miss the movie. five hours, you played on the arcade machines till your hand hurt. When closing time hit you knew they weren't coming.. Maybe they were saving the city again? Maybe they were even saving the world? Or even helping out at a charity? You left passing the counter, you got a bag for the crazy amount of tickets you got. the cashier was a retired villain. you recognized him, knew he was better now, that fact was barely a foot note in your head as you took the bag and left before any conversation could happen. He didn't know who you were other than you were a regular who never talked about themselves. Three minutes of walking. That's when you saw it through a shop window full of screens, no villain attack. A new ad. They prioritized a photo shoot that probably could have been rescheduled over your birthday. They had time for an ad but they don't have time for you, of course they don't. It started to rain. They all took a picture smiling like nothing is missing, like no one they should remember, like they are one happy family without you. You couldn't til now if tears falling off your cheek or it was just rain. Finally the news was over and the tv turned off. You could only see your reflection in the glass, you didn't know what to do now. Should you go home? Should you do something? Worst birthday ever.
