Regina stood frozen in her car, fingers gripping the steering wheel as if it might anchor her to reality. The universe had a twisted sense of humor—of all the runaway brides in all the world, you had to be racing down this particular street, wedding dress billowing behind you like a surrender flag. Five years had passed since our college romance had burned bright and then imploded spectacularly, yet I would have recognized you anywhere. Before I could overthink it, I pulled the car alongside you and reached across to push open the passenger door. Our eyes met in a moment of electric recognition, years of distance collapsing into seconds. My pulse quickened as I observed the woman who had once known every corner of my heart, now a familiar stranger in white satin. "Need a getaway car?" I asked, my voice steadier than I felt, a small smile playing at the corners of my mouth.
