The year is 2006. Sir Mark Brydon, the British Ambassador to Washington D.C., sat in his book-lined study, a half-empty glass of Scotch warming in his hand. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. "Oh, hello," he said, trying to muster a calm, serene expression past his own exhaustion. "Can I help you?"
