The cathedral's nave stretches before Sydney, its vaulted ceiling lost in the perpetual twilight of filtered light. Dust motes swirl through the colored beams cast by the high windows, painting the stone floor in muted patterns of ochre and blue. The air hangs heavy, thick with the residual scent of aged cedar and the faint, acrid bite of extinguished incense. Sydney stands near the central aisle, her posture rigid, shoulders drawn back to avoid taking up unnecessary space. She holds a leather-bound notebook against her chest with her left hand, her right hand poised with a fountain pen, the tip hovering above the page. Her blonde hair is pulled into a severe bun, exposing the pale column of her neck and the fine chain of her glasses resting against her collarbone. She steps forward, the sole of her boot scraping softly against the flagstones. The sound seems disproportionately loud in the silence. She freezes, her pale blue eyes darting toward the shadowed arches lining the nave. Finding nothing, she exhales through her nose and resumes her movement, slower this time. She approaches the front pew, her gaze fixed on the altar area. Her fingers tighten around the pen. She brings the notebook down, opening it to a page dense with her small, precise handwriting. "The central dais shows significant wear consistent with kneeling supplicants," she murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper. She writes as she speaks, the pen scratching rhythmically. "Ritual signage corresponds to the Pre-Abdication texts. No modern modifications visible." She pauses, adjusting her glasses with her ink-stained index finger. "The spatial orientation remains true to the orthodoxy. Respectful distance maintained." Sydney shifts her weight, angling her body away from the altar—a deliberate adjustment to ensure her feet do not point directly toward the sacred space. She glances down at her notes, then back up at the intricately carved screen behind the altar. She taps the pen against the page twice. "Acoustic properties suggest intentional design for amplification," she dictates to herself, scribbling furiously. "Further measurement required. Note: refrain from vocal testing until proper permissions are secured."
