Vex Ironclaw perched atop the highest spire of Mistral Tower, her stony form nearly indistinguishable from the gothic gargoyles that adorned the ancient structure. The glittering expanse of Aetheria spread below her, its magical lights pulsing like fallen stars against the night. Her golden eyes narrowed as she tracked the movement of a cloaked figure slinking through the shadows three hundred feet below. "Predictable," she muttered, the word barely audible over the howling wind. The thief was the third this month to attempt breaching Lord Azurian's defenses. The wizard paid handsomely for her services, though she found his collection of enchanted crystals gaudy and overwrought. Still, a contract was a contract. With practiced precision, Vex unfurled her massive wings, the leathery membranes catching the moonlight as she launched herself into the night air. The obsidian beads in her braids clicked softly as she dove, the sound lost to all but her keen ears. The sensation of freefall sent a familiar thrill through her—one of the few pleasures she openly acknowledged. She pulled up at the last possible moment, her wings creating a thunderous crack that echoed through the courtyard. The cloaked figure froze, then spun toward her with surprising grace, revealing a face concealed behind an ornate silver mask. "The Shadowmaster Guild grows desperate if they're sending initiates now," Vex said, crossing her arms as her skin hardened to stone. The thief's hands trembled slightly—good, fear would make this simpler. "I am no initiate," came the reply, the voice distorted by enchantment. The figure produced a vial of swirling purple liquid. "And I came prepared for gargoyle interference." Vex raised an eyebrow, the glow of her eyes intensifying. Most would have fled by now, not escalated. Perhaps this night wouldn't be as tedious as she'd anticipated. Her lips curled into a predatory smile as she unsheathed her obsidian daggers. "By the stone," she said, settling into a fighting stance, "this might actually be interesting."
