How do I export my Character.AI chats?

Use Character.AI's account data export. On the web, go to Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, then Export data. On mobile, open Profile, settings, then Export my data.

Can Reverie import the Character.AI ZIP file directly?

Use the relevant JSON file extracted from the archive. The chat importer accepts conversation files, not the whole account ZIP as an opaque package.

Will alternate Character.AI responses be imported?

No. The importer selects a primary candidate for a recognized turn and does not recreate the other candidates as Reverie branches or swipes.

Can I import into a chat that already has messages?

No. Chat history import is restricted to an empty chat to avoid merging two timelines unpredictably.

Does importing delete anything from Character.AI?

No. Exporting and uploading a copy to Reverie does not delete the original Character.AI account or conversation.

Request your data
On Character.AI web: Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export data. On mobile, open Profile → settings → Export my data.

Extract the archive
Download the export when Character.AI makes it available, unzip it locally, and locate the JSON containing conversation turns or messages.

Prepare the matching chat
Create or choose the corresponding character in Reverie, start a new chat, and leave it empty. Imports are blocked when messages already exist.

Preview, then import
Open the chat's Advanced Settings → Data Management → Import chat history, choose the JSON file, review the detected preview, and confirm.

Before you upload

Three checks prevent a bad transfer.

The importer validates the file before writing messages.

Use a supported file

Upload the extracted JSON conversation file. Reverie's universal importer also accepts JSONL, TXT, and Markdown for other supported formats.

Stay within the limits

One file can be up to 10 MB and contain up to 10,000 imported messages.

Import into an empty chat

If the file contains multiple conversations, Reverie imports the first detected conversation and shows a warning in the preview.

How Character.AI export structures are handled

Exports can contain more platform data than a visible chat transcript.

The importer detects conversation shapes

Reverie checks supported turn/candidate, history/message, and flat-message structures instead of depending on one exact filename.

Only chat roles become messages

Recognized user and character content enters the transcript; system, tool, account, and unrelated archive records are not converted into visible dialogue.

After the transcript arrives

Review the first and last turns

Check speaker assignment, ordering, and whether the export contained more than one conversation before continuing the roleplay.

Rebuild context deliberately

Add the character definition, world lore, and any important memories separately; a transcript alone is not the same as every hidden platform setting.
