Keyboard shortcuts
Keys and gestures for the chat screen and its menus.
Everything the chat screen responds to: keys in the composer and its menus, and the taps, holds and drags that do the same jobs on a touch device.
Keyboard
These need a physical keyboard, so in practice they are desktop shortcuts — the arrow, Tab and ⌘/Ctrl combinations especially.
| Keys | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Enter | Sends the message | Composer. Ignored while a reply is streaming, and while an input method editor is composing text |
| Shift + Enter | New line | Composer |
| Esc | Clears the quoted message | Composer, when something is quoted |
| Backspace with the caret at the very start | Removes the last slash-command chip, or the custom directive | Composer |
| ↑ / ↓ | Moves the highlight | Slash-command menu and @ mention menu |
| Enter or Tab | Picks the highlighted entry | Slash-command menu and mention menu |
| ← / → | Cycles the highlighted command's values — Short, Medium, Long and the like | Slash-command menu only |
| Esc | Dismisses the menu | Slash-command menu and mention menu |
| Enter | Submits the directive | The Custom box in the slash-command menu |
| Shift + Enter | New line | The Custom box |
| Esc | Cancels | The Custom box |
| ⌘ / Ctrl + Enter | Saves | Edit message dialog, Manual Edit tab |
| ⌘ / Ctrl + Enter | Generates the rewrite | Edit message dialog, AI Rewrite tab |
| ⌘ / Ctrl + Enter | Submits the instruction | The Custom box in Enhance First Response |
The dialogs show the Mac spelling (⌘ + Enter) and accept Ctrl + Enter everywhere else.
Touch and pointer gestures
| Gesture | Hold | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Tap a message | — | Reveals the message toolbar. On desktop, hover the message instead |
| Tap a suggestion chip | — | Sends that suggestion immediately |
| Press and hold a suggestion chip | 0.5 s | Drops the text into the composer instead of sending it |
| Press and hold Regenerate | 1 s | Opens Regenerate with… to pick a model for this one retry |
| Press and hold the play button on a message | — | Opens voice settings for that character. The button's own label says so: Play (Long press for settings) |
| Hold the microphone | — | Records while held; releasing sends the transcript |
| Drag left while holding the microphone | — | Release to cancel — the recording is thrown away |
| Drag right or up while holding the microphone | — | Release to edit — the transcript lands in the composer instead of sending |
| Tap the character's avatar during a voice call | — | Interrupts the character mid-sentence |
On desktop the microphone is tap-to-record rather than hold-to-talk: click to start, click again to stop. The drag gestures are a touch behaviour, with a threshold of about 70 px in either direction.
Dictation stops on its own after 60 seconds, or after 5 seconds of silence.
