Prompt fields

The three raw prompt fields a creator can set, and how they combine.

Three fields on the Advanced Settings tab write directly into the instructions the model receives. They are the sharpest tools in the editor and the easiest to misuse: none of them replaces Reverie's own rules, and none of them is required.

FieldShownUse it for
System PromptAlwaysHow the character behaves and what they will not do
Reply Format PromptAlwaysThe shape of a reply — structure, markup, point of view
NSFW PromptOnly when NSFW Content is switched on (General Settings tab)How intimacy is portrayed for this character

None of the three has a length limit. All three accept macros.

System Prompt

The System Prompt is added as a block of custom instructions alongside everything else Reverie assembles — the character's fields, the player's persona, memory, world books.

It appends; it does not override. Reverie's own contract about who controls the player's character and how context is ordered is placed after your text, deliberately, so that no prompt can redefine it. Text that tries to redefine who controls the player's character, or the order in which Reverie trusts context, has no effect.

What it is good at:

  • Long-term rules of engagement — "never confirm whether the prophecy is real", "she lies about her age until trust is earned".
  • Pacing and scene-handling rules that are not facts about the character.
  • Hard refusals that belong to the character rather than the platform.

What belongs elsewhere: facts about who the character is (Detailed Description), how they talk (example conversations), and messages to the player (Creator notes, which are never sent to the AI).

Reply Format Prompt

This one replaces Reverie's default structure rules — markup conventions, paragraph shape, how dialogue and narration are marked. Leave it empty and characters use the platform default.

What survives your override: the anti-repetition and variety rules. Reverie keeps applying them on top of your format, because long chats drift into same-shaped prose without them. Your format decides the skeleton; the variety rules keep what fills it moving.

Reply length is not yours to set. It is a per-player setting, and so is narration style. A format prompt that says "always reply in exactly 200 words" fights the reader's own preference and usually loses.

NSFW Prompt

The field only appears once NSFW Content is on for the character. Its contents are folded into Reverie's intimate-content guidance rather than replacing it, and that whole section is only present when both things are true: the character is flagged NSFW, and the player has adult content enabled on their account.

Leave it empty and the platform's default intimacy guidance applies at the intensity the player chose. Fill it when a character needs something specific — preferences, boundaries, a particular register, things to stay away from.

How they stack in a turn

  1. The character's own fields — description, personality, appearance, relationship, examples, scenario.
  2. The always-on canon of any attached world books, then the player's persona and their relationship to the character.
  3. Formatting: your Reply Format Prompt if set, otherwise the default, plus the variety rules either way.
  4. Intimate-content guidance, including your NSFW Prompt, when it applies.
  5. Your System Prompt, as custom instructions.
  6. Reverie's runtime contract — last, and not overridable.

Not this kind of styling

Colours, fonts, bubble shapes and chat backgrounds are a reader-side setting: each person chooses them for themselves, on their own device, and a creator cannot ship them with a character. They live in appearance.
