Getting started

Importing your history

Bring conversations in from SillyTavern, Character.AI, ChatGPT, Claude and RisuAI, and carry them on in Reverie.

Reverie can read a chat export from another platform and replay it into a conversation here, so a history you built elsewhere keeps going instead of starting over.

This page is about conversations. Bringing a character across — a Tavern card, a CharacterHub download — is a different tool with its own page: Import characters.

Before you start

You need to be signed in, and you need an empty chat with the character the history belongs to: import is refused the moment a conversation already has messages, so it can never overwrite one. If the character does not exist on Reverie yet, import the character first, then start a chat with it and leave it empty.

Import a conversation

Open an empty chat

Start a new conversation with the character and do not send anything. The opening the character shows you on a fresh chat is not a stored message, so the conversation still counts as empty until you reply to it.

Open Import Chat

Open the side panel, go to the Settings tab, expand Chat Management and choose Import Chat. The row only appears while the chat is empty.

Drop the file in

Drag your export onto the drop zone or browse for it. Reverie detects the format itself — there is nothing to choose.

Check the preview, then import

The preview names the format it recognised, the number of messages, how they split between you and the character, and the date range it found. Anything it had to skip appears under Heads up. Confirm with Import, which names the count, and the chat reloads with your history in it.

What Reverie reads

SourceFile to bring
SillyTavernThe chat's .jsonl file
Character.AIThe conversation from your data export (.json)
RisuAIThe exported chat (.json)
ChatGPTThe conversation from your data export (.json)
ClaudeThe conversation from your data export (.json)
Generic JSONAny OpenAI-style list of messages with roles
Text or MarkdownA Name: message transcript

Chub and JanitorAI exports saved as SillyTavern JSONL work through the SillyTavern path.

LimitValue
File types.jsonl, .json, .txt, .md
File size10 MB
Messages per file10,000 — split a longer history into several files and import them into separate chats
TargetOne empty chat, one file at a time

What carries over, and what doesn't

Carried over: every message's text, who said it, the order they were in, and the original timestamps where the export has them. Messages without a usable timestamp keep their relative order. If the export names the conversation, a newly created chat takes that name. In a group chat, a speaker name that matches one of the characters in the room is attributed to that character; anything unrecognised is attributed to the main one.

Not carried over: images and attachments, system and tool messages, and alternate swipes — only the reply that was selected in the source comes across. A chat export also says nothing about the character itself, so definitions, world books, personas and memory are not part of it.

Once the messages are in, Reverie summarises them so memory and context work from your very next turn. That summary is not charged, but it is skipped if your credit balance is too low to cover the tokens it would take — the import still succeeds.

When it refuses

MessageWhat to do
Unsupported file typeSave the export as .jsonl, .json, .txt or .md
That file is too largeSplit it; the ceiling is 10 MB
That file is emptyCheck you exported the conversation, not an empty shell
We couldn't read this fileThe file is not a chat export Reverie recognises — try the generic JSON or transcript route
This file has too many messagesSplit it below 10,000 messages
This chat already has messagesStart a fresh conversation and import into that
This chat belongs to another accountYou are signed in as someone else

Taking your conversations out

The same Chat Management section holds Export Chat once a conversation has messages. Four formats: JSONL (SillyTavern-compatible, and the one to use if you ever want to import it back), Markdown, Plain text and HTML. Reverie's own JSONL export is a valid import file, so you can move a conversation between characters or back it up and restore it.
