Appearance
The six themes, how chat messages are styled, and per-character chat backgrounds.
Three separate controls decide how Reverie looks: the app theme, message appearance, and the chat background. All three are stored in the browser you set them in.
None of this syncs, and none of it is visible to anyone else. Themes, message styling and chat backgrounds live in the browser that set them, so your phone keeps its own. A creator cannot ship any of them with a character, and nobody else sees your version of a chat.
Themes
The colour-mode button in the app's home header opens the theme menu. The same menu is on the themes showcase, where each palette is previewed at full size.
| Theme | Palette |
|---|---|
| System | Follows your device's light or dark setting. The default. |
| Light | Warm paper tones made for long, comfortable reading. |
| Dark | A calm, low-glare canvas that keeps content in focus. |
| Night Sakura | Plum shadows and rose light for stories after dark. |
| Cyberpunk | Electric contrast and industrial energy for future worlds. |
| Sakura | Soft blush surfaces for tender, intimate storytelling. |
| Enchanted Forest | Mist, sage, and quiet magic for gentle fantasy. |
All six are available to every account — none of them has to be unlocked. Switching themes animates the change unless your system asks for reduced motion.
Message appearance
Chat Settings → Chat Experience → Message Appearance → Customize Appearance. Scope: This device. It applies to every chat you open in this browser, and there's a live preview in the dialog.
The dialog has three tabs. Font applies to both sides of the conversation; User and Character style each side's bubbles separately.
| Tab | Setting | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Font | Font Size | 12–24 px | 16 |
| Font | Font Weight | 300–700 | 500 |
| Font | Line Height | 1.2–2.0 | 1.625 |
| User / Character | Bubble colors | Follow theme, Transparent, or one of the preset colour pairs | Follow theme |
| User / Character | Border Radius | 0–20 px | 16 |
Each preset carries its own background and text colour, so a bubble stays readable whichever one you pick. Reset to Default undoes everything in the dialog at once.
A custom colour belongs to the theme you picked it in. Switch to another theme and the bubbles go back to that theme's own colours rather than carrying over a pair that was mixed for a different palette. Transparent is the exception — it survives a theme switch.
Chat background
Chat Settings → Chat Experience → Chat Background → Customize Background. Scope: This character — the background applies to every conversation you have with them, and to no one else's.
| Setting | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Background Image | Upload Image — JPG, PNG or WebP, max 5 MB — or Choose from Gallery to pick one of the character's own images | None |
| Background Opacity | 0–100 — how visible the image is behind the messages | 40 |
| Background Blur | 0–20 — blur the image for readability over a busy picture | 0 |
| Bubble Spacing | Compact, Comfortable, Spacious | Comfortable |
Uploads are scaled down to at most 1920 px before they are stored. Choose from Gallery is empty for a character whose creator hasn't published gallery images, and Reset to Default clears the image and the sliders together.
Cosmetics you unlock
Achievements award three kinds of cosmetic — titles, avatar frames and profile themes — which you equip in the wardrobe. Those are a different system from the six app themes above: a profile theme paints your public profile page, not your app. See Cosmetics.
The thinking behind the current interface is in Designing a quieter Reverie.
