Preset personas
Offer players a ready-made role to play opposite your character.
Most characters define a relationship with the player — "you are old friends who have not seen each other in years". A preset persona goes further: it hands the player a whole role to step into, so they can start a specific story in one tap instead of inventing a background first.
They live on the Character Description tab, folded behind Multiple player roles · advanced.
What a preset holds
| Field | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Name | 1–100 characters | What the player picks from the list, e.g. "The new transfer student" |
| Who the player is | Up to 2,000 characters | Background, personality, what they want |
| Relationship with this persona | Up to 2,000 characters | Overrides Relationship with Player for anyone using this role. Leave it blank to inherit the general one |
| Use as character default | — | One preset can carry this flag |
You can ship up to 5 presets per character. Add them with Add persona.
How a player gets one
A player adopts a preset from the character page or the persona dropdown in a chat. Adopting it copies the preset into their own personas — it does not link to yours.
That copy is the point. Edit a preset later and you will not silently rewrite a story someone already started with it; delete one and their copy keeps working, it only loses its source.
Which persona a new chat starts with
| Situation | What is used |
|---|---|
| The player has set a personal default persona | Their default |
| No personal default, and you flagged a preset as the character default | Your character default |
| Neither | No persona |
| Group chat | Never auto-applies a single character's default |
Existing chats keep whatever they were started with, including no persona at all. The persona dropdown labels where each option came from — Character preset, Character default, My default — and keeps showing the source after adoption.
Writing them
- Make each preset a different story, not a different name. "The new transfer student", "her estranged brother" and "the detective assigned to her case" open three characters; three variations on "a friend" open one.
- Fill the per-persona relationship whenever the role changes the dynamic. That is the field that makes a preset feel authored rather than cosmetic.
- Keep the general Relationship with Player usable on its own. Presets are optional, and plenty of players will never open the list.
- Presets are written from the player's side. Second person reads best: "You transferred in three weeks ago and still eat lunch alone."
Preset personas are a creator feature. Players can also write their own personas from scratch and carry them between characters — see personas.
