Scenarios

Creator-authored opening situations, and why picking one starts a new chat.

A scenario is an opening situation a creator wrote for their character — a place, a time, a reason the two of you are talking. Picking one sets the scene for the whole conversation and usually changes the greeting you get.

Scenarios are authored by creators only. You cannot write your own; what you can always do instead is start an ordinary chat and set the scene in your first message.

Picking one

WhereWhat you see
Character page → Scenarios tabPreset Scenarios, each with Use this scenario and a Novel button that starts an AI novel from the same premise
Chat side panel → Scenarios tabThe same list, plus Current Scenario and Clear scenario

Picking a scenario always starts a new chat. It does not re-dress the conversation you are in: Reverie opens a brand-new chat with that scenario's setting, and the one you were in stays in your history untouched. The picker says so — "Selecting a scenario will reset the current conversation and set a new conversation background." Clear scenario works the same way: it opens a new, scenario-free chat rather than stripping the scenario out of this one.

Two consequences worth planning around:

  • A group chat collapses back to solo. Choosing a scenario drops the rest of the cast and starts a one-on-one chat with the character whose scenario it is.
  • You cannot change a scenario mid-chat, and a fork cannot either. A chat carries exactly one scenario, fixed when it is created; a fork inherits its parent's scenario and is stuck with it. To try the same character in a different situation, start a new chat from the scenario.

A scenario and a moment are mutually exclusive — starting a chat from one clears the other.

What the character actually receives

Each scenario has a short player-facing description and a longer Detailed AI Context. Only one of them is sent: the detailed context if the creator wrote one, otherwise the description. Never both.

It is rendered into the character's profile block as the active scenario, with instructions to treat it as the character's current reality — mood, place, time, the NPCs named in it. That block is rebuilt from the character record on every turn, so unlike the messages themselves a scenario is never summarised away or trimmed out of a long conversation. There is no length budget on it either; whatever the creator wrote ships in full, every turn.

Greetings and openings

Each scenario carries its own starter dialogs — a greeting plus the suggested replies that appear under it — and those override the character's own. A character with three scenarios can therefore offer far more than three openings, because each scenario can hold several. On a new chat you can re-roll with Try another opening, or take the first move yourself with I'll start instead.

Creators can also attach a background image to a scenario, which becomes the backdrop of the chat.

Scenarios do not work in group chats

The group prompt takes no scenario at all. In practice that means:

  • The Group Chat button does not appear in a chat started from a scenario.
  • Picking a scenario from a group chat ends the group.

If you want several characters in a scene, write the setup in your opening message instead. See Group chats.

Writing scenarios for your own character

In the character editor, Advanced Settings → Scenarios. Each entry takes a title (the only required field), a short description, a Detailed AI Context, starter dialogs and an optional background image. There is no limit on how many you add, and the order you arrange them in is the order players see.
